Audi Hungaria: New Testing Equipment For E-motors

2020. 12. 16.

• Strength tests with new, special equipment for testing the rotor of e-motors
• Alfons Dintner, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi Hungaria: "We are consistently expanding our e-competencies"

Győr, December 16, 2020 - At Audi Hungaria, development and production work closely together. In Győr, 500 highly qualified employees are working currently at the technical development, which consists of two departments, drive development and vehicle development. The vehicle development specialists can now carry out a complete strength analysis of the electric drive through with specially installed equipment, the spin-test benches.

"Electromobility determines not only our production, but also plays an increasingly important role in the development. Our technical development is the third-largest development center of AUDI AG and also a competence center for design, simulation as well as acoustic and strength testing. With test facilities for testing the rotor of electric motors, we have built up a unique competence in the Volkswagen Group. We will make our new capacities and know-how available for the entire Group," says Alfons Dintner, Chairman of the Board of Management of AUDI HUNGARIA Zrt.

Within technical development, the task of strength development is to ensure that all vehicle parts have adequate strength. Strength analysis and evaluations are performed through numerical simulations as well as physical tests of components, modules and the entire vehicle. The design of the high-speed rotor, one of the most important components of the electric drive, has a major impact on the efficiency of the entire electric drive. Accordingly, it must be continuously optimized during its development.

With the two new test benches, the electric motor rotors can be tested for centrifugation, cracking and dynamic speed. During testing, the rotor is suspended in a hermetically sealed test chamber and spun to the appropriate speed in accordance with strict safety regulations. At the same time, the rotor is heated in a closed test chamber by adjustable heating elements that can be switched on in different ways. One of the test facilities has a high-precision laser with which the rotor circumferential growth can be measured online. This enables the observation of how the rotor behaves during the test as a function of speed in both the radial and axial directions. Equipped with innovative capacitive and laser-optical technology, the measurement system enables extremely accurate measurements.
