Audi Hungaria is Preparing for e-Engine Production

2017. 11. 16.

• A new competence area in engine production
• Modular production applied for the first time in serial production
• Achim Heinfling, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi Hungaria: “We are ready for the next chapter of the history of our company”

Győr, 16 November 2017—Audi Hungaria is preparing for the next era in the history of the company: The serial production of e-engines will be launched in Győr in 2018. The first pieces of production equipment have already been integrated into the production process. The future serial production of electric engines will be supported by three new testing stands at the department of Engine Development.

“By 2020, three electric Audi vehicle brands will be present on the roads. We are proud that we will contribute to the production of these models a great deal with our e-engines”, Achim Heinfling, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi Hungaria said. “With the production of e-engines we are building up a whole new competence area, which will ensure the competitiveness of our company in the long run”. Currently, Audi Hungaria manufactures petrol and diesel engines for over 30 sites of the Volkswagen Concern. Furthermore, nearly the full spectrum of Audi engines is being manufactured in Győr.

At Audi Hungaria the first e-engines will be manufactured at an 8,500-m2 hall, where the first pieces of production equipment, robots, screwing and measurement stands will be installed in the upcoming weeks. This is the first area where a whole new production concept called modular production will be applied. Engines will be manufactured at production “islands” along a modular principle, which will replace the conveyor lines. Despite the fact that the order of production is predefined, modular production enables several alternative routes and more flexibility. As a result, higher production volumes and the introduction of new variants can be implemented faster without compromising the present production process. Parts will be moved by driverless transport systems between the stations. These will orientate themselves in the hall by laser scanners, using new algorithms.

The employees of Audi Hungaria have participated in several training programs to build up their competences step by step. In the e-Competence Center they made themselves familiar with the technology of e-engines and became technical experts of e-engine production.

Beside the preparation of serial production, to ensure the premium quality of e-engines in the long run, Audi Hungaria also commissioned three new testing stands at the department of Technical Development, intended especially for e-engines. Efficient and sustainable testing equipment enables the testing and permanent loading of e-engines.

High-performance climatic chambers, intended for testing environmental conditions, are important parts of the testing stands. These enable aging and material tests in various climatic and mechanical circumstances. The temperature ranges from -40 to +160 Celsius degrees, while relative humidity can be adjusted up to 98%.
