• The Győr-based company has the highest proportion of rail freight transport among European vehicle manufacturers
• Thomas Faustmann, Chief Executive Officer of AUDI Hungaria: ‘We have implemented innovative logistic solutions to relieve congestion on roadways and reduce our environmental impact.’
• Over one million less heavy duty trucks on roadways
The 20 000th block train arrived at the manufacturing site of AUDI HUNGARIA MOTOR Kft. today. This means that since the company was founded in 1993, nearly 13 400 000 tons of raw materials, components and finished goods have been transported between Győr and Ingolstadt by rail. To reduce its environmental impact and relieve congestion on roadways, the company transports 59 percent of materials by rail. This is a ten percent increase in comparison to the transportation ratio of 2009. As of this date, the distance covered by rail totals 12 516 000 kilometres. Among European vehicle manufacturers, Audi ranks first in terms of rail freight transport ratio.
‘We have been systematically improving the structure of shipping goods. In this context we wish to implement cutting edge logistic concepts in our new vehicle factory plant as well. Not only will these plans reduce our environmental impact, but they will also provide a traffic relief on roadways’, said Thomas Faustmann, Chief Executive Officer of Audi Hungaria. By using rail transport the company has relieved roadway congestion with more than one million heavy duty trucks.
Over 50 percent of raw materials, engines and vehicles are transported by railway. Materials, components and bodyworks are transported from Ingolstadt, while finished engines and vehicles, and body elements are transported from Győr to Ingolstadt. In new logistic plans drawn up in relation to the expansion of the manufacturing plant, particular emphasis will be put on environmentally friendly transportation.
Freight transport started in 1996 with five pairs of trains. At present 16 pairs of trains are operated weekly between Győr and Ingolstadt. With its reliability and shorter shipping times, rail transport facilitates a continuous flow of materials, while it has low environmental impact. Audi Hungaria has been cooperating with Hungarian and Austrian railway companies for 15 years.
