The fourth model from Győr: the Audi RS 3 Sportback

Audi is extending its dynamic RS series with a new model, the RS 3 Sportback. The new top model from the A3 series is the fourth Audi model to be manufactured in Győr. The 2.5 litre, five cylinder, 250 kW (340 HP) engine is produced in the Audi Hungary engine works. The new model will be available from the spring of 2011.

“We have already proven our outstanding competence in vehicle manufacturing in the A3 segment. As the RS 3 is the first Sportback model for Audi Hungaria, we can also extend our expertise in this field” – stated Thomas Faustmann, CEO of Audi Hungaria. Alongside the TT Coupé, TT Roadster and A3 Cabriolet, the RS 3 is the fourth model to be assembled on the same production line in Győr.

The Audi RS series cars have always been top of the range models. The RS 3 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/hour in scarcely 4.6 seconds – the best result when compared with its competitors. The top speed of the car is electronically restricted to 250 km/hour. In spite of a weight of 1,575 kg, the average fuel consumption of the Sportback is 9.1 litres per 100 kilometres – corresponding to a CO2 emission of 212 grams per kilometre. The engine for the RS is also produced in Győr. The 250 kW (340 HP) performance of the 2.5 litre TFSI prime mover is gained from the 2480 cm3 piston displacement – representing a specific power output of 100.8 kW (137.1 HP) per litre.

An investment of more than 150 million forints was made in Győr for the manufacture of the RS 3. This was used for the reconstruction of certain production equipment and for the expansion of logistics. Staff attended a special training course in Ingolstadt in order to prepare for the new challenges.

Vehicle manufacture began in Győr in the spring of 1998 with the first Audi TT model. This was followed by the TT Roadster in the autumn of 1999. The TT bodywork is manufactured and lacquered in Ingolstadt, then the vehicle is assembled in Győr. Since November 2007, the Audi A3 Cabriolet has also been assembled on the TT production line. Around 700 employees work in the Audi Hungaria vehicle plant at present.

In the coming years Audi will make an investment of around 900 million euros in Győr, which will extend the company to cover the whole manufacturing process in addition to the present engine and vehicle production. From 2013, 125,000 vehicles will come off the production lines every year.
