Audi Hungaria expands factory in Győr

2010. 09. 23.

• The automotive company invests about 900 million euros (252 billion forints) in expanding vehicle manufacturing by the end of 2013
• 1,800 new jobs will be created in Győr
• Rupert Stadler President of the Board of AUDI AG: “We create the best conditions to achieve our further growth objectives“

AUDI AG made an important step for the successful future of AUDI HUNGARIA MOTOR Kft. According to today’s decision of the Supervisory Board of the shareholding company, they will expand vehicle production in their Hungarian facility in the following three years. This was announced by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and Rupert Stadler, Board President of AUDI AG today in a joint, international press conference held in the Hungarian Parliament.

“By expanding the Győr factory, we will improve our international competitiveness and create the best conditions for the achievement of our further ambitious growth objectives,” said Rupert Stadler the President of the Board of Directors of AUDI AG. By 2015, by selling 1.5 million cars a year, Audi wishes to become the most successful automotive manufacturer in the premium category.

To call the necessary manufacturing capacities into existence, AUDI HUNGARIA MOTOR Kft already purchased an approximately 200-hectare area in the immediate vicinity of the factory from the Hungarian government this summer. Apart from the 23-million euro (6.5-billion forint) purchase price, the company will invest about 900 million euros (252 billion forints) in the development of automotive manufacturing by the end of 2013. While the bodies of the cars assembled in Győr are currently produced in Ingolstadt and arrive in Hungary by train, in the future, the complete manufacturing process, from making the bodywork through paintwork until the assembly, will be carried out by the Hungarian company itself.

From 2013 on, 125,000 cars will roll off the manufacturing line in Győr each year including Audi TT Coupés, Roadsters, A3 Cabriolets and a further version of A3. In conjunction with the increased production volume, 1,800 new jobs will be created in the Győr facility. After the expansion project, Audi — including its own headcount, suppliers and service providers — will ensure livelihood for over 15,000 people in the region.

“The development aiming to build up the full spectrum of car manufacturing is an explicit recognition of the Győr factory,” underlined Frank Dreves, a member on the Board of Directors of AUDI AG, responsible for production, and President of the Supervisory Board of AUDI HUNGARIA MOTOR Kft. “This decision is an important sign for the entire group. The division of work between various production bases offers an opportunity to keep our possibly existing under-utilised or overloaded capacities in balance,” explained Dreves.

“Our innovative and efficient engines have been forming the heart of the Audi models and other brands of the Volkswagen concern since 17 years,” said Thomas Faustmann, the General Manager of AUDI HUNGARIA MOTOR Kft. ”We count this to be a recognition of our work so far, and we are pleased with the opportunity to carry out car production in its entire depth, apart from engine production. We are convinced that, by relying on our spirited and highly qualified colleagues we will further strengthen the trust of our mother company in us.”

Audi Hungaria was founded in 1993. Since then, the company has made a name for itself by producing innovative and efficient engines. Since 1998, vehicles have also been produced in the manufacturing hall of the Győr factory. Currently Audi TT Coupé, TT Roadster and A3 Cabriolet models are assembled here. With the recently purchased landed property, the industrial surface of the company increased from 174 hectares to 370, and earthwork necessary for the development can be started before this year is out.
